Like stepping back in time, the road to East Bali leads to the charming centre of Candidasa and beyond it to Amed. In between are many of Bali’s best-preserved villages, where life has changed little despite the rising tide of tourism. With the sea on one side and the majestic Mount Agung on the other, this is a great place to wind down and see some of Bali.
The beach at Candidasa is protected from the elements and not always the prettiest beach but don’t be fooled, close by are favourites like Blue Lagoon and Secret beach which are great for swimming and snorkeling. Padang Bai is a little fishing village, a perfect place to grab a boat for the trip to the Gili Islands or just for a day trip of diving, snorkeling and even picnicking at some of the stunning local beaches.
Temples and natural attractions are abundant in this area, from the stunning water palace at Karangasem, Bali’s most important temple at Besakih, the original Bali Aga village of Tenganan and great diving at Tulamben. There are also some stunning mountain treks, rice field and village tours to take and of course, the climb to the peak of Mt Agung for the adventurous.
There are plenty of soft attractions as well; from beautiful resorts with pools you can visit for the day, local and international restaurants and markets selling local produce and arts and crafts.
